How to Use the Domain Name Generator

Finding the perfect domain name is one of the most important decisions when starting a new business, launching a startup, or creating a side project. Our free domain name generator helps you brainstorm hundreds of creative domain ideas in seconds by combining keywords you provide. Unlike simple domain search tools, this generator lets you control exactly how your keywords combine.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Choose Your TLDs

Start by selecting which domain extensions (TLDs) you want to check. We offer 16 popular options including .com, .io, .ai, .app, and more. Most businesses should prioritize .com, but tech startups often prefer .io or .ai for a modern feel.

Pro tip: Select multiple TLDs to increase your chances of finding an available domain. If mybrand.com is taken, mybrand.io might be available.

Step 2: Enter Keywords in Columns

The generator uses three columns that can be combined in different ways:

  • Column A (Prefix): Action words or modifiers that go at the start. Examples: get, try, use, go, my, hey, the
  • Column B (Main Keywords): Your core brand or product terms. Examples: booking, flow, sync, spark, wave, pulse
  • Column C (Suffix): Endings that can make names unique. Examples: app, hq, ly, ify, hub, lab, base

Step 3: Select Combination Patterns

This is what makes our tool unique. Instead of randomly generating names, you choose exactly how columns combine:

A

Just prefixes (get.com)

B

Just main keywords (booking.com)

AB

Prefix + Main (getbooking.com)

BA

Main + Prefix (bookingget.com)

BC

Main + Suffix (bookinghq.com)

ABC

All three (getbookinghq.com)

Step 4: Check Availability

Once you've generated your domain list, click "Check Availability" to see which domains are actually available for registration. Available domains show a green checkmark and can be registered directly through Spaceship with one click.

Domain Name Best Practices

Do This

  • Keep it under 15 characters for easy typing and recall
  • Make it easy to spell when heard (avoid homophones)
  • Choose something memorable and brandable
  • Check trademark databases before registering
  • Consider how it looks in a URL and email address
  • Think about international audiences if applicable

Avoid This

  • Hyphens in domain names (hard to communicate verbally)
  • Numbers unless they're integral to your brand
  • Double letters where words meet (e.g., pressstart)
  • Names too similar to established brands (legal risk)
  • Trendy spellings that will age poorly (e.g., "-ly" overuse)
  • Names that are hard to pronounce or remember

Frequently Asked Questions

How many domains can I generate at once?

The tool can generate up to 500 domain combinations per search. If you have many keywords in each column and select multiple TLDs, you'll quickly reach this limit. We recommend starting with fewer keywords and expanding once you've found promising patterns.

Is the availability check accurate?

We check availability in real-time through the Spaceship API, so results are current. However, domains can be registered by others at any time, so we recommend registering quickly if you find a domain you love. Premium domains may have different pricing than standard registrations.

What characters can I use in domain names?

Domain names can contain letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), and hyphens (-). They cannot start or end with a hyphen, and cannot contain spaces or special characters. Our tool automatically removes invalid characters from your input.

Should I register multiple TLDs?

If you're building a serious brand, it's wise to register at least the .com and one alternative (.io, .co) to protect your brand. You can redirect all variations to your primary domain. This prevents competitors or squatters from registering similar domains.

What makes a good startup domain name?

Great startup domains are short (under 12 characters), memorable, easy to spell when heard, and don't conflict with existing trademarks. They often combine familiar words in new ways or create entirely new words that are still pronounceable. Think: Stripe, Notion, Figma, Linear.
